IDS Newsletter #5: November 2011

Tuesday, 08 November 2011 16:37 | Written by Gerald Gabler | Print

ids.newsletter.november.2011Dear readers,

We are now back home after a very exciting meeting during the EADV congress in Lisbon. The IDS meeting took place on thursday 20 October, the day before the official starting of the congress. More than 150 people attended the meeting, in a full and crowded room. The meeting was mainly focused on a scientific agenda with several IDS members presenting their recent work. In this issue of the Newsletter you will find a brief summary of the presentations. Continuing with the educational purposes of the
newsletter, the current issue will focus on dermoscopic aspects of non-melanoma skin cancer, starting from basal cell carcinoma.

You will find a summary of old and new criteria to detect this very common neoplasm, that can be responsible of high morbidity, and that sometimes can enter differential diagnosis with other malignant tumors, particularly melanoma.

The case of the newsletter, selected from the IDS forum database, highlights common problems found in the daily clinical practice in confidently diagnosing this tumor.

As usual, the last section is dedicated to the following updates from the society:
1. Deadline for abstract submission for the Dermoscopy World Congress in Brisbane extended
2. IDS survey
3. Call for papers for Dermatology Practical & Conceptual
4. Joint meeting of IDS, ISDIS and ICWG in San Diego

Looking forward to seeing you soon at one of the next meetings
With all my best regards
Elvira Moscarella

IDS Newsletter #4, April 2011

newsletter.4Dear Readers,

in the current issue of the newsletter we will focus the attention on dermoscopic features of seborrheic keratosis. A dedicated section and the case of the newsletter will discuss about the many faces that these benign lesions can show, being sometimes not easy to differentiate from malignant keratinocytic tumors and melanoma.

I'd like also to give you updates about the decisions took by the IDS board meeting during the last assembly in New Orleans. The assembly took place during the AAD congress in New Orleans on February 4, 2011. Representatives of two societies operating in the field of non invasive diagnosis of skin tumors were invited to enter the board, namely Allan Halpern for the International Society of Digital Imaging of the Skin (ISDIS), and Giovanni Pellacani for the International Confocal Working Group (ICWG). As already happened this year in New Orleans, the IDS meetings in the next years will take place in conjunction with the ISDIS meeting and ICWG meeting. These collaborative session will be scheduled once a year during the AAD congress and will mainly focus on a scientific agenda. The assembly also decided to end the relationship with "Dermatology" as official journal of the IDS. The new journal will be Dermatology Practical and Conceptual. This is a free access, peer reviewed journal, first issued in October 2011. The collaboration with the journal will guarantee free access for 1 year to Derm 101, a huge on line dermatologic resource, to all IDS members.

Finally, I'd like to highlight the ongoing UDA project. The aim of this project is to create a new, unified IDS-consensus algorithm composed of the dermoscopic features that are most discriminatory between nevi and melanoma. Additional aims will be to compare the current algorithms using a single evaluation session;to test the diagnostic value of new dermoscopic features that are not scored in the current algorithms and to test the difference between polarized and nonpolarized dermoscopy regarding diagnostic accuracy by the different features. We are very keen about this project and curious about the results, which could bring us to the definition of a new algorithm for diagnosing pigmented skin tumors. Broad participation of the IDS members is thus strongly encouraged.

Looking forward to seeing you soon at one of the next meetings

With all my best regards

IDS Newsletter #3, November 2010

Monday, 08 November 2010 21:41 | Written by Gerald Gabler | Print

newsletter3.iconDear Readers,

During the last general assembly of our society, held in Miami on February 2010, the election of the new IDS representatives took place. Our president, Peter Soyer, expressed his intention to resign from his role as president and the assembly agreed to give to myself the responsibility to continue his action. Iris Zalaudek was designated to be the new general secretary and Rainer Hofmann-Wellenhof was confirmed in his role as treasurer.

In this context, I would really like to thank all of you for your continuous support and let you know that I will try to do my best to continue what Peter started and to keep going with the improvement of our society.

At the assembly we briefly discussed the program for 2010/2012, in which we identified 3 priorities, namely, to promote membership and dermoscopy worldwide, to expand education, and to promote research. Ash Marghoob, Harald Kittler, and Scott Menzies were designated to be in charge for these 3 tasks, respectively. An executive board was also established in order to discuss twice a year the developments of our program.

One of the first challenges for me was to relaunch our website with new contents and a brand new style. Together with Gery Gabler, our coordinator and webmaster, we are proud to announce that we just went live!

On the website you will find a number of new sections, including tutorials, pubmed news, and a dermoscopy podcast section. This was developed with the help of Ralph Braun in the role of coordinator and we are really very curious to verify if this new way of delivering education in dermoscopy will meet the interest and appreciation of our members.

Looking forward to seeing you soon at one of the next meetings

With all my best regards

Giuseppe Argenziano

newsletter1.iconIn this 2nd issue of the IDS Newletter we will focus on dermoscopy of amelanotic melanoma. This group of melanomas still represents a challenge for every clinician given the broad spectrum of possible differential diagnoses.

In this context we like to make you aware of the recent publication by Dr. Scott W. Menzies, who conducted a study via the IDS investigating the value of dermoscopy in the diagnosis of amelanotic and hypomelanotic melanomas (ref. Arch Dermatol 2008; 144:1120-7).

Please note that the IDS Newletter aims to provide space for all IDS members to send their own cases or to express their opinion about the IDS and dermoscopy in general.

Finally, we are excited to announce the 2nd World Congress of the IDS to be held in Barcelona, Spain, on November 12-14, 2009. Have a look at the final program:
