Update #11: September 2011

Saturday, 24 September 2011 19:50 | Written by Gerald Gabler | Print
With this email we like to give you some updates concerning four activities of the IDS:

1. The IDS survey
2. The IDS sister society meeting in Lisbon
3. The IDS Research Award 2011

1. The IDS survey

Two months ago we launched a survey aimed to explore the attitudes of the IDS members in approaching patients with skin tumors and the way of using dermoscopy in their routine work. We like to thank the 900+ IDS members who have already completed the questionnaire, but we also like to push a little bit those members who have not joined still !;-)

The survey will take not more than 5 minutes to be completed! We would really be grateful if you decide to participate. With your participation you will definitely contribute to establish new guidelines for all clinicians interested in implementing dermoscopy in their clinical work.

Update #10: August 2011

Wednesday, 24 August 2011 00:00 | Written by Gerald Gabler | Print
With this update we like to give you some updates concerning 4 activities of the IDS:

1. The IDS survey

2. The IDS world congress in Brisbane

3. The UDA study

4. The IDS Research Award 2011

1. The IDS survey

One month ago we launched a survey aimed to explore the attitudes of the IDS members in approaching patients with skin tumors and the way of using dermoscopy in their routine work.

We like to thank the 600+ IDS members who have already completed the questionnaire, but we also like to push a little bit those members who have not joined still !;-)

The survey is composed of 29 questions (subdivided in 4 pages) and it will take not more than 5 minutes to be completed! We would really be grateful if you decide to participate. With your participation you will definitely contribute to establish new guidelines for all clinicians interested in implementing dermoscopy in their clinical work.

2. The next IDS world congress in Brisbane -- message from the congress president:

Dear IDS member,

it is our great pleasure to invite you to join us at the 3rd World Congress of Dermoscopy held from May 17 to May 19, 2012, in Brisbane, Australia. We have prepared an exciting program with many workshops and symposia covering all clinical relevant aspects of dermoscopy including a series of key-note lectures on the newest developments in the skin cancer arena. Please have a look at the Congress Website for further details www.dermoscopycongress2012.org.

As per today the "Call for Abstracts" is open -- http://www.dermoscopycongress2012.org/abstract-submissions.htm -- please note that the deadline for abstract submission is October 31.

I look forward to being able to welcome you to Queensland in May 2012.

H. Peter Soyer

3. The UDA study

As you can see at: http://www.dermoscopy-ids.org/index.php/studies, a few months ago we launched an official IDS study aimed to create a new, unified algorithm composed of the dermoscopic features that are most discriminatory between nevi and melanoma.

The study has been joined by about 100 IDS members and we like to thank all of them for their effort! By the way, the study is approaching its deadline, thus we like to remind to whom is still interested to join as soon as possible!

4. 2nd Call for the IDS Research Award 2011

The International Dermoscopy Society (IDS) launched a Research Award of 7000 € in recognition of advances and research in the field of dermoscopy and non-invasive diagnostic techniques to investigators and clinicians for excellent, innovative and continuous research in this field or closely associated discipline.

For general conditions for application, please see www.dermoscopy-ids.org.

Update # 8: January 2011

Monday, 10 January 2011 20:37 | Written by Gerald Gabler | Print

Dear members of the IDS,

We are pleased to announce the following 2 major news:

First, please download the final program of the joint meeting of the International Dermoscopy Society (IDS), the International Society for Digital Imaging of the Skin (ISDIS), and the International Confocal Working Group (ICWG), which will be held in conjunction with the 2011 American Academy of Dermatology conference in New Orleans, LA.

Second, we are pleased to announce the official start of the Unified Dermoscopy Algorithm (UDA) Study. The primary objective of the UDA Study is to determine the most relevant dermoscopic structures and features to help differentiate melanoma from nevi. In addition, we will explore which dermoscopic structures can be reproducibly observed by participants, as a function of their level of experience. Lastly, after analyzing this information we will attempt to create one universally accepted algorithm to assist clinicians in their ability to correctly diagnose nevi and melanoma.

The success of this project is completely dependent upon your willingness to participate. We encourage you to partake in this endeavor, irrespective of your level of clinical expertise. To assure anonymity, we will remove participant identifiers from the data set prior to analysis, and these identifiers will be kept only for quality assurance purposes. The data generated from your participation has the potential of resulting in enormously important insights that will benefit us all for many years to come.

To begin, please go to our website at http://uda.dermoscopy-ids.org/ and follow the instructions. On the study website you will find tutorials with images, definitions for all dermoscopic structures, explanation of dermoscopic terminology, and 40 cases for you to evaluate. We have created a simple, user-friendly intake form to assist you in recording your observations for the 40 lesions assigned to you.

If you have any question or comments now or during the study, please do not hesitate to contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Thank you for being part of the UDA study and see you soon in New Orleans!

Geppi Argenziano

Update #9: April 2011

Tuesday, 26 April 2011 00:00 | Written by Gerald Gabler | Print
With this update we like to bring your attention to several important new activities of the IDS:

1. Harald Kittler, one of our executive board members, became editor-in-chief of Dermatology Practical and Conceptual, the new official organ of the IDS. This is a free access, on-line peer-reviewed publication, which will have a section on Dermoscopy (section editor, Alon Scope). The first issue of the journal is due next October, and the editors asked us to spread the voice of a call for papers in the field of dermoscopy.

2. Due to the connection between Dermatology Practical and Conceptual and the Derm101 website, a free access to this huge dermatologic resource will be offered to all IDS members for 1 year. Your email address will be passed to the editorial office of Derm101 in order to send you a password to get into the restricted area. Of course, your email will not be used for any commercial purposes, but please click on the link below within 3 weeks if you do not like your email to be shared with the Derm101 editorial office.

3. We are proud to announce a call for an award of 7000 Euro in recognition of advances and research in the field of dermoscopy. Please go to www.dermoscopy-ids.org to find out the details concerning the call.

4. The UDA project is one of the active studies of the IDS and many of you are participating in the case evaluation. If you are interested to join the study, this is still possible through the study section of the IDS website.

5. Last but not least, the April 2011 Newsletter of the IDS has been just published. You can download it here

With all our best wishes

Geppi Argenziano & Iris Zalaudek
